Do you know why golf compression levels are now differentiated by high, medium, and low rather than specific numbers?
With advances and upgrades in golf ball production materials and technology. The difference in compression properties of golf balls of the same grade is minimal. So now the golf ball compression rating only needs to be expressed in terms of high, medium, and low. Previously, specific figures were given because of the wide variation in compression performance between the different golf balls produced.
What Is Golf Ball Compression?
The deformation caused by the club face touching the golf ball is the golf ball compression.
If you swing faster and hit the ball harder, the more the ball compresses or if the ball is compression rating softer, the more the ball compresses. So swing speed and the compression rating of the ball are the two factors that affect the compression of the golf ball.
How to choose a golf ball based on compression rating?
Different golf balls' compression ranks may bring a different feel, spin, accuracy, trajectory, and greenside responsiveness. We will talk about the differences between the three levels based on swing speed, feel and ball flight control and discuss what rating is right for you. We use high, medium, and low to separate the golf ball compression ratings.
Low compression
The low compression ball (soft golf balls with softer cores) is suitable for golfers with swing speeds below 85 mph. For a swing of this speed will result in better accuracy, better control, and less potential for side spin.
Medium compression
The medium compression ball (standard golf balls with average cores) is suitable for golfers with a swing speed between 85-104 mph. 95-104 mph speeds may cause control problems if low-compression golf balls are selected.
High compression
High-compression golf balls(firmer golf balls with harder cores) are suitable for swings of 105 mph or faster. A high-speed swing with low compression can lead to more yardage, but it can also be hit too high and create excess spin, so choosing a high-compression ball can lead to better control.
Golf ball brands and compressions
In order to meet the different speeds and skills of different golfers. Many different brands such as Bridgestone as well as Wilson focus on the compression of the ball. So almost every golf company has started to design and produce golf balls with different compression levels for different swing speeds. Titleist insists that the feel, accuracy, spin and trajectory of the golf ball should be the main focus.
